I love Toledo
I'm overjoyed to read about the tremendous anti-fascist mobilization in Toledo, Ohio. In response to a march by 15 members of the American Nazi Party through a racially mixed neighbourhood, 600 protestors turned up and forced them to stop.
The news is now about the subsequent riot. But if you read the chronology, you see that, as usual, the police protected the fascists from the crowd, and for good measure fired tear gas on the protestors. But the protestors didn't back down; instead they fought back, forcing the police and Nazis to retreat.
This is how they did it - London Communists and Jews rout a British Union of Fascist march in the 1936 Battle of Cable Street
In one of the more pathetic displays of liberalism, the mayor tried "to talk to the crowd through the megaphone, explaining that the neo-Nazi group had a constitutional right to march." This only angered the crowd; as one resident said, "They don't have the right to bring hate to my front yard."
The fascists said they were being censored; of course, they never call it censorship when they intimidate, beat up and murder Jews, gays and minorities. Nazis have no right to free speech: they are a political movement dedicated to the extermination of minorities and the left. If they speak, they deny free speech to others. They must be opposed by any means necessary. It's as simple as that.
It's always interesting to see how the police protect fascists in these situations. It shows clearly how the state sanctions violence against minorities.
Even local gang members mobilized, which is a nice change from terrorizing their own communities to directing that violence someplace socially useful, like opposing racist whites. (Though that may be the police trying to rationalize the violence as gang-related, instead of by pissed-off black folk.)
Couldn't have put it better myself - Joolz at a British Anti-Nazi League event
It's common to call America 'imperialist' or even 'fascist', so let's not forget that the majority of Americans are anti-fascist and willing to act on it.
Rock on, Toledo!
