Confirming my prejudices
Stereotypes are awful things. We shouldn't deduce attitudes & behaviours from someone's race, gender or class. Aw, what the heck, why not? The Guardian breaks down the latest poll suggesting Americans don't trust President Bush. Who does?
Yeehaw! I have a rational political reason for being a Republican!
Bush's supporters are most likely to be: rich, white, suburban, ultra-Christian, Southern males. Those identities are closely linked with power in capitalist society, which Bush is a firm booster of. While each could be broken down into its component complexities e.g. Christianity is also a religion of the poor, the overall picture holds. It's nice to get some independent verification for my lazy thinking.
IS GEORGE BUSH HONEST OR NOT?
Whites, 46 percent, were more likely than minorities, 31 percent, to say Bush is honest. Just over half of whites said he is not honest, while 69 percent of blacks felt that way. Southerners, 51 percent, were more likely than those in other regions to say Bush is honest. In other regions, it was 40 percent or less. Those who make more than $50,000 a year are more likely than those who make less than that to say Bush is honest.
DOES THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION HAVE HIGH ETHICAL STANDARDS OR NOT?
Suburban men, 53 percent, are more likely than suburban women or those in urban and rural areas to think the administration has high ethical standards. Unmarried women, 25 percent, were least likely to say the administration has high ethical standards. Whites, 44 percent, were more likely than minorities, 31 percent, to say the Bush administration has high ethical standards. White evangelicals, 65 percent, were more likely to say the administration has high ethical standards, while Protestants, 50 percent, and Catholics, 34 percent, were less convinced.
